COVER STORY: Book Recovery Contest

Cover a book and document your work for this juried contest with $400 in cash prizes. Use any book, recover (or even rebind), and supply a newly crafted hard cover around an existing text block.

Examples include, but are not limited to: converting paperback books into hardcovers, redoing boring hardcovers, creating handmade slip cases or clamshell boxes for fine books.

  • Cash Prizes:
    $250 for grand prize winner and acquisition by UVA Special Collections
    $75 book artists’ choice (voted on by Virginia Book Arts membership)
    $75 for best craft

No entry fee; books will not be returned

Entries will be judged blind by a University of Virginia special collections curator. Prizes will be judged on:

-creativity of concept
-suitability of design and materials to text
-excellence in craft

Eligibility: Book artists must be residents of the United States. Members of the VABC/Center for the Book community are not eligible for the book artist’s choice prize.
Conditions: Submitted books become the property of Virginia Humanities and will be publicized/auctioned at the 2018 Raucous Auction to support the Center’s educational mission.

TO ENTER:

1. Register at vareads.org/cover-story including a 200-word narrative and at lease one (but no more than six) photos.
